141 – Inmarsat Satellite Aero Signal Decoding for Trajectory Path Recovery During Emergency

Since the tragic destiny of the flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft registration 9M-MRO, which integrated onboard an Inmarsat Broadband terminal called the Inmarsat Classic Aero system transmitting flight data named ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) sent from satellites to Aircraft(SatCom ACARS), many investigations were conducted by experts and analysts. Inmarsat being a network of seven geostationary satellites, it is then considered challenging to determine with high precision its latest positions and predicted or smoothed trajectory. In this project the candidate will get expert analysis on Inmarsat Signal Processing and Decoding using a real transceiver based on SDR (Software Defined Radio) which has capability to decode Inmarsat Aero ACARS channels. Real tests are considered and required to decode multiple messages in order to estimate the aircraft position and reconstruct its trajectory based on the state of the art in signal processing algorithms. At the end, application to the released dataset of the Malaysian airline MH370 could be considered as a serious case study and contribution.
